ImageDAVENPORT — Donald J. Cooksey, 56, a resident of Davenport, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, following a brief illness.
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Don will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division, Davenport. Burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Victory Junction Gang Camp.
Donald John Cooksey was born on May 30, 1954, in Davenport, a son of Donald E. and Mary (Crisci) Cooksey. Don was united in marriage to Glenda Ross on April 14, 1995. Don worked for 33 1/2 years as a fiber optics technician for Qwest Communications, formerly Northwestern Bell, retiring in 2006. Don was awarded the U.S. West Theodore N. Vail Silver Medal for outstanding public service in 1985. He was the fourth Iowan to win this award.
Don enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially following his favorite driver, Kevin Harvick. He enjoyed tuning into Track Pass and hearing Kevin and crew chief communicate during the races. Don and Glenda also enjoyed traveling to NASCAR events around the country. Don was also a talented woodworker and enjoyed grilling.
Don is survived by his wife, Glenda, Davenport; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon (Jason) Hall, O’Fallon, Missouri, and their son, Nathan William Hall; step-children, Shannon (Randie) Jenkins, Clarksville, Tenn., and their daughters, Meghan and Cheyanne Jenkins; and Michelle Jenkins, Quincy, Ill.; his parents, Donald and Mary Cooksey, Davenport; sisters and brother-in-law, Colleen (Terry) Peterson, Davenport; brother, John Cooksey, Davenport; and numerous nieces and nephews.
